Dr. Syed Nusrath is a Consultant Surgical Oncologist specializing in Gastrointestinal (GI) Oncology, with more than a decade of dedicated experience in oncology. He is currently practicing in the Division of GI Surgery at Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute, Hyderabad, one of India’s leading comprehensive cancer centers.

Dr. Nusrath has extensive training in advanced GI cancer surgery, with a strong focus on esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, and colorectal malignancies. He has received international fellowship training in Japan, including a Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Pancreatic Surgery at Tokyo Medical University and a Fellowship in Esophageal Surgery at the National Cancer Center, Tokyo. He has also completed the Fellowship in Robotic and Innovative Surgery (FARIS), affiliated with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and is a Fellow of the European Board of Surgery (FEBS).

His surgical expertise includes minimally invasive and robotic GI oncology, advanced esophagectomy and gastrectomy techniques, pancreatic resections, fluorescence-guided surgery using indocyanine green (ICG), and complex colorectal surgeries. He has a particular interest in improving surgical outcomes through fluorescence imaging, enhanced lymphadenectomy, and strategies to reduce anastomotic complications.

Dr. Nusrath plays an active academic role and is a DNB Teacher and Trainer in Surgical Oncology, with over 10 years of experience in postgraduate teaching. He is a faculty member for multiple surgical oncology training programs, serves as an external examiner for the DrNB Surgical Oncology practical examination, and is deeply involved in mentoring young surgeons.

He has an exceptionally strong research background, with more than 50 publications in reputed national and international peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Surgical Oncology, Indian Journal of Surgical Oncology, Lancet Oncology, and the International Journal of Surgery. His research primarily focuses on minimally invasive GI cancer surgery, fluorescence-guided surgery, esophageal and gastric cancers, and outcome-based oncologic care.

Dr. Nusrath is also a Principal Investigator for multiple prospective clinical trials, including studies on fluorescence-guided lymphadenectomy, anastomotic leak reduction, nutritional outcomes in upper GI surgery, peritoneal cytology in gastric cancer, and financial toxicity among cancer patients. He additionally serves as a Co-Principal Investigator for international multicenter trials such as the ADD-ASPIRIN Phase III trial.

His academic excellence has been recognized through multiple national awards, including Best Oral Paper and Best Video Awards at prestigious conferences such as NATCON IASO, Indian Cancer Congress, AMASICON, and ISES, as well as selection for an international fellowship at the North England Upper GI Unit, Newcastle upon Tyne (2026).

Dr. Syed Nusrath is an active member of several professional bodies, including the Indian Association of Surgical Oncology, Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India, Indian Association of GI and Endoscopic Surgeons, European Board of Surgery, and the Indian Society of Peritoneal Surface Malignancies.

Through a multidisciplinary, team-based approach, Dr. Nusrath strives to deliver oncologically sound, function-preserving, and evidence-based surgical care, with the ultimate goal of improving survival, quality of life, and long-term outcomes for patients with gastrointestinal cancers.
